Volunteer Opportunity from Jessica Rivait

The following is an opportunity not only to help clean up in Detroit, but also to aid in the revitalization of a Detroit neighborhood. Many elementary school children spend their time after-school at this recreation center and would be devastated if it were to be torn down.

"The last few weeks have literally been a blur. Neighbors and
residents of the local business and nonprofit community
continue to hold events to help generate awareness about the
future of the Kronk Recreation Center. Last Friday, over 21
representatives from local block clubs, state officials and
community organizations met to figure out ways concerned
residents can help to save Kronk Recreation Center, which we
believe will be a cornerstone in helping revitalize the
surrounding neighborhood, called "Claytown" on Detroit's
South! west side.

Yesterday, two representatives from Neighbors United to Save
the Kronk (Stephanie Stern and Robbie Fennell) met with Rec
Department Director Charles Beckham to discuss volunteer
opportunities to help save the Rec Center. We agreed that we
would take advantage of Super Bowl weekend as an opportunity
to initiate a neighborhood clean-up, as many professional and
amateur boxers will be training there over the next week, and
it can help bring positive national exposure to the
community. Below, I am forwarding you a list of projects
Neighbors United to Save the Kronk and other organizations
are helping initiate over Superbowl Weekend. Volunteers
Welcome :)

Weather permitting, and it looks good, there will be
a "Put a tux on the Kronk" neighborhood clean-up on Saturday,
January 28, from 1-3 p.m. Thyssen-Krupp Steel will be
providing hot beverages and refreshments. The city has also
agreed to provide "Kronk Ambassador" T-Shirts for all
Volunteers. We will be meeting at the Rec Center at 5555
McGraw. All are welcome. Please call Stephanie Stern at (313)
320-6894 if you plan on attending."
